If you enjoy creepy murder mysteries and psychological thrillers then you’ll probably like Sharp Objects. I took this photo right before a red-eye flight a few weeks back, then proceeded to finish it on the plane when I definitely should have been sleeping. Oops.
While I can’t say I was surprised by the plot, I think Sharp Objects highlights Gillian Flynn’s writing ability better than Gone Girl. (Full disclosure: I didn’t really like Gone Girl.) She shows that she can build a disturbing murder mystery, of course, but she also weaves in little details that make you pause. I found myself doubling back to reread sections I enjoyed (I thought the scene with the Horses book was perfect—am I the only one?) and taking breathers after reading stuff I immediately wanted to purge from my memory (alas the phrase “fairy nests” will haunt me for the rest of my days, I hate it so much).
All in all, it was compelling. I’m looking forward to watching the show. Even though I have confirmed that the fairy nests make an appearance.
